The Varsity Panthers whipped Stonewall Tuesday night and put a lock on a seat in the Skyline District Tournament scheduled to begin February 20.
It was an uphill battle for Rappahannock. The Panthers were weak on rebounding in the first quarter, pulling in only six. Despite commiting just one foul in the first quarter while getting several shots from the charity stripe, the Panthers trailed at the end of the period, 16-14.
A steal and a basket by Gary Leake at the opening of the second quarter tied the tally at 16 all and then a free throw by Jimpiy Tomko put the Panthers ahead by one, 16-17. But Stonewall’s Curt Weaver found his range and connected for 12 points in the period to give Stonewall the lead again, 30-25, at the half.
Gary Leake dominated both scoring and the boards for the Panthers in the third period, connecting for four baskets and grabbing four rebounds to pull Rappahannock closer, 43-41.
Dean Wilson’s free throw and goal in the early seconds of the fourth quarter gave the Panthers a 44-43 edge but Rappahannock slipped into foul trouble and put Stonewall into an early bonus situation.
Greg Bright countered by shooting 100 per cent from the charity stripe, four-forfour, while Wilson added three free throws after Stonewall put Rappahannock in.the one-and-one bonus.
