Rappahannock has the highest unemployment rate of the five counties in the ' Rappahannock-Rapid an Planning District, according to figures released by the Virginia Employment Commission.
With 135 persons out of a work force of 2,229 unemployed during the month of December, Rappahannock’s rate stood at 6.1 per cent. By comparison, unemployment during the same month was 4.6 per cent in Culpeper and Madison, 4.4 per cent in Orange and 3.4 per cent in Fauquier.
Compared to November, 1979, unemployment throughout the planning district edged up slightly from 3.7 per cent to 4.2 per cent in December, 1979.
Despite the local increase, unemployment in the area compares favorably to 4.7 per cent for the state of Virginia and 5.6 per cent for the nation as a whole, according to the VEC.
