‘‘They’re going on the stage but first we have to build some cabinets,” Von Fange answered.
As with most of the high school programs, space is a problem in industrial arts. Ford holds his building trades class in an area designed as a storage closet. It has no windows, no heat and no ventilation.
Von Fange said he’s qualified to teach courses in plastics, ceramics and metal work. "But there’s no room.” he added.
Both instructors would like to see more female students taking industrial arts. While shop classes are open to girls, only two are currently enrolled, according to Von Fange. “They’re doing extremely well,” hev said. “We need a jo| more girls in here. , The way society’s going, they’ll need to know how to do all this.”
Ford would like to see more vocational courses offered to college-bound youngsters as elective. “They could use woodworking or auto mechanics,” he said."Vocational education shouldn't be viewed as a dumping ground for kids who can’t make it academically,” Ford concluded.
