William H. Whyte, conservation and land use planning author, will be the featured speaker at the Piedmont Environmental Council's annual meeting May 17 at the Carriage House of Oatlands, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s property near Leesburg.
Whyte, who will address the group on rural conservation and town revitalization issues in the Piedmont region, is widely known as an expert on both rural and urban land use.
Whyte, who was Editor of Fortune magazine and the author of The Organization Man (1956), left Fortune in 1958 and pioneered research in open space planning in the late 1950’s.
His study. Conservation Easements, led to open space legislation in a number of states, including Virginia. He was also directly responsible for successful state programs in Connecticut and in New Jersey.
