It’s not only the expert craftsmanship of the old pieces that intrigues her. “I like the sense I get of being in touch with the past.” Barbara puts seven days a week into Rappahannock Refinishers. Sandra, her partner in the business, can only devote part-time to wood. With a degree in social work from Clarion State and hours on her masters from the University of Pittsburg, Sandra is the full-time director of community services for Community Action, based in Warrenton.
Sandra spends evenings and weekends breathing sawdust in the shop and drives her van for pick-up’ and delivery of furniture. ‘‘But she’s not as much into it as I am,” Barbara noted.
The two friends stumbled on Rappahannock by chance. Barbara worked for an air lines for ten years before she became dissatisfied enough with her job to chuck it all and start back to school. She enrolled in the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, planning on a career in the film industry. As part of an assignment, she traveled down to Rappahannock, where she had friends living, to do a movie on the county.
