In his controversial yet highly acclaimed work, The Last Landscape, Whyte explored methods of protecting the countryside and criticized the wasteful, decentralized land use patterns encouraged by many professional planners.
Since the publication of The Last Landscape, much of Whyte’s efforts have been devoted to the study of towns and cities—a subject book, The Social Life of Small Urban Places, follows many years of work as “professional observer” and director of the New York Street Life Project.
