Gottwald.
Mr. Gottwald is president of the Ethyl Corporation and chairman of the governor’s Advisory Board on Industrial a Development. The state is footing the bill for the official members of the delegation, but Mrs. Dalton and the Gottwalds are travelling at their personal expense.
Interestingly, on the day the group arrived in Belgium, the governor’s office announced it had received word the British firm of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. planned a $30 million dollar expansion of its plant in Chesterfield County. While no claim was made that the present trip had anything to do with the announcement, it could not have been better timed to point up the value of such overseas forays, or to mute any possible criticism of them.
This rather protracted introduction is necessary because it underscores the main theme of the Dalton Administration.
Calvin Coolidge once said, “The business of this country is business.” Likewise, for Dalton, the main preoccupation of his governorship is business.
We hasten to add that this is not said in a spirit of criticism. Certainly the health of the economy of the state and the prosperity of her people are proper subjects of constant gubernatorial concern.
But our point is that there are other subjects, equally important, which are also a part of the responsibilities of his office and which would benefit from similar personal attention.
