treasurer—both set by the state—will jump from $12,281 to $19,500.
In the preliminary budget, Cox listed the commonwealth’s attorney salary at $25,000, approximately double the $12,652 figure for the current year. He noted that the supervisors have discretionary power over this amount and must pay only the state minimum of $18,000.
In other salaries set by the state, the sheriff will go from $12,445 to $18,500 and the total for deputies from $36,551 to $46,500. Beginning this year the state will pay the total salaries of law enforcement personnel, including sheriff, deputies and commonwealth’s attorney.
Luke noted after the work session that salaries of noninstructional school personnel—administrators, bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers and aides—had also been upped from 9 to 12 per cent in the preliminary budget.
According to school board chairman Beverly Massie, raising the salaries of all school employees by the same percentage as the 12 percent teachers will receive will cost a total of $10,248.
