Out-of-state passenger car travel on Virginia’s major highways dropped almost 10 per cent in March from the corresponding month in 1979.
The drop contributed to an overall decline of 3.04 per cent in travel on the state’s interstate, arterial, and primary highways. It was the largest monthly decline since the 3.1 per cent October drop and marked the 10th consecutive month that travel has declined, the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation said today.
Travel by all passenger cars dropped 1.88 per cent from March, 1979. Virginia passenger car travel was down 1.3 per cent and out-ofstate passenger car travel was off 9.72 per cent.
Commercial travel also showed a substantial decrease, 5.89 per cent, when compared to March of the preceding year.
The travel analysis was compiled from traffic counts taken at 192 locations on Virginia’s major highways, according to J. P. Mills Jr., the department’s traffic and safety engineer.
