Kicking off the pick-yourown season this year is the perennial favorite— strawberries. The 1980 “Pick-Your-Own Small Fruits” guide published by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services lists 42 berry farms throughout the state offering strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. The guide includes a map, directions and notes on whether the fruit is freshpicked or pick-your-own.
Also available from VDACS is a fact sheet entitled “The ABC’s of Berries,” with information on the care, freezing and canning of various berries; and a recipe sheet called "Berries—Plain and Fancy,” featuring recipes developed by a VDACS home economist.
