Hence, we venture a modest suggestion.
We would like to see the governor make a 12-day tour around Virginia, or a longer one if possible.
We would like to see him drop in, unannounced, for informal visits to primary and secondary schools and classrooms, state hospitals, institutions of higher learning and correction institutions. We would like to see him take the time to chat with teachers and students, patients and doctors, inmates and prison guards.
To be sure, every two years the governor and the “money” committees of the General Assembly make pilgrimages to correctional facilities and other state institutions, but on these he is accompanied by an entourage worthy of the Queen of Sheba. He gets carefully orchestrated and well prepared tours of the places visited, and meticulously rehearsed briefings from the top officials involved.
