It must be noted here that Dalton has been remarkably faithful to his campaign pledge to hold “Peoples Days” around the state. With his cabinet, he has conducted a series of town hall type meetings to which members of the public have been invited to come and air their views.
Unfortunately, the history of these meetings has been that they serve mainly as a forum for special interest groups, zealots' for'br against one cause or another and some certifiable kooks. All too seldom have those appearing been individual citizens with thoijghtful comments or suggestions to offer the Governor.
What we have in mind is rather different. He would hop in a car with his security guard and perhaps a cabinet secretary or two, and go calling on the people he was elected to serve. He would not be asking them to come to him, as they must in his meetings.
And on his way between stops, he might pause at country stores, have a coke and a can of sardines and listen to the discourses on the real “State of the Commonwealth” which he would be certain to hear.
What a block-buster of a morale builder this kind of thing would be for the teachers, students and others whom he might visit.
And what a block-buster of an education it would be for the governor!
In terms of dividends to the state, the yield could be at least as great as, say, a visit to a factory in Sweden or a hog farm in Belgium.
