Third race was the Mary D. Slaughter open timber race. Scratches accounted for 15 entries, so that only three went to the post. Score Sheet, the early leader, lost ownerrider George Mahoney after the second fence, but the remaining two ran a good match race, jumping together over several fences. Then Rilla Ledgard’s Woodstock Nation, winner of three ladies’ races and third in the Eustis Cup, led by four lengths going into the penultimate fence. Upon landing he slid and fell. Rider Don Yovanovich caught him remounted and finished second behind Melvin Dutton’s owner-ridden Gamma Man, who cantered down to the finish.
The ladies’ race also decided the season’s champion. Patti Cassel set the pace with Donna Truslow’s Honey’s Mom (a close second in the mare competition this year and winner in 1979) picking up speed down the mountain and hugging the inside of the sharp left turn. She won by 12 lengths over Susan Sutula on her Too Far Gone. Third was Shelley O’Higgins on Amberson Place, whose two points thus gained were enough to give her the season’s championship over Cassel, the winner the past three years.
Next was the open hurdle race which gave winner Royal Creed the mare championship. Chris Kolb had Will O’Keefe’s Noble Jay mare forwardly placed throughout the mile and a third race, passing the leader New World III in the stretch to cross the wire A half length ahead of Randy Waterman's Pueblo Hundindo, ridden by Mark Stickley. Third was Mrs. Jean Schulze’s New World III, Don Yovanovich up.
The Rappahannock pony race was run in three divisions. First to go were the horses. Rog Smithwick on Mrs. T. A. Randolph’s Anvil (by The Hammer of course) was the wire-to-wire winner by two lengths over Alex “Muffin” Day riding
