lead of the owner-rider hurdle race was Max Lammers’ Garden Games, with the rest of the five-horse field hot on his heels. Then Roy Graham’s Man of Rhythm pushed his way to the front at the third and the pace quickened. At the third last of eleyen fences Joanne’s Brother gained the lead and maintained it to cross the wire three lengths to the good of Jay Barr’s Pill Mill, who came on with a rush in the stretch. Third was Garden Games.
Larry LeHew’s appropriately named Lucky and Bold, son Jeff LeHew up, was awarded the New Mount Marshall trophy for ownerrider foxhunters in a walkover because it was the only horse of 12 entered not to scratch.
Winding up the afternoon’s sport was the unique hound race, open to hounds belonging to members of the Northern Virginia Foxhunters Association or individuals in Rappahannock Hunt territory, but not to hounds from recognized packs. More than 40 hounds, numbers painted on their sides, ran off after the scent laid over the mountainside course. The winner was Kelly Corbin’s Susie, who won in 1978 also. Tommy Olinger’s Singer was second, followed by Raid Portfow’s Thunder, Jack : Bruce’s Lucy and Tommy Olinger’s Cyclone.
