Steven Jack Holschuh, son of Capt. and Mrs. Howard Holschuh of Castleton, was one of 83 people killed in the fire Friday at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Hotel.
According to his father, Holschuh had traveled to Las Vegas with his fiance, Cathy Sanders, for a belated birthday celebration. The couple, both residents of Vail, Colorado, died of asphyxiation.
Authorities at the hotel fire scene, second worst in U.S. history, believe the blaze began in electrical circuitry above the delicatessen on the main floor and smoldered before exploding and propelling thick smoke upwards into elevator shafts. Fire alarms in the hotel failed to operate. Most of the victims died of smoke inhalation.
