After Finishing their studies at Goddard, the partners left Vermont for the Kvarnes family farm in Gid Brown Hollow which Eric’s father, a psychoanalyst with the Washington School of Psychiatry, bought in 1961 from Thomas Baldwin. In cooperation with the senior Kvarnes, who uses half the building for the nursery business he runs with Eric’s brother, they built their glass studio. "I did the insulation, the electrical work, concrete and plumbing myself,” Eric beamed.

And when he finished with the building, he and Nina had to construct all their own equipment. “You can’t buy glass blowing equipment except for the blow pipe and hand tools. Everything else is do-it-yourself,” Eric said.
“Glass blowing hasn’t changed for 2,000 years other than the furnace and the fuel I use. All the hand tools, blow types and the ways of forming glass are the same,” Eric said as he began an explanation on the process and equipment.
