Since the opening of deer season last Monday, November 17, approximately 250 kiUs have been checked from Rappahannock, according to county game warden Jim Bankston. Earlier, 20 deer were taken with bow and arrow during that special season.
Bankston reported that the tally was running about average here, unlike the majority of the state where numbers killed have been below normal for the first week of the season.
In addition to the deer, two bears were slain with bow and arrow but none shot on the opening day of regular bear season, November 24, Bankston said. He reported that 20 turkeys have been checked to date.
Along with legitimate sportsmen, lawbreakers are out again in force with illegal road hunting continuing as the county's major problem.
