After four years of decreasing cattle numbers around the nation, it appears that the rebuilding of herds has begun.

Cattle numbers in Virginia have increased even more dramatically than the nation as a whole, reported K. C. Williamson, Extension beef marketing specialist at Virginia Tech.

“Total cow numbers in the United States have increased 2,408,000 head, or five percent, over July 1 a year ago. Since milk cow numbers increased only about one percent, the number of beef cows was up six percent over the past year,” Williamson said.
