According to Tucker Hill, executive director of the Landmarks Commission, a property must be associated with important events, developments, or persons or possess outstanding architectural or archaeological significance to be eligible for listing on the register. In addition, it must possess integrity of location, design, setting, workmanship, and association. “Each structure or site is carefully evaluated and analyzed before we make a formal nomination,” he said. ^Other recent additions to the Virginia Landmarks Register include Bruton Poor House Archaeological Site, York County; Charlottesville and Albemarle County Courthouse Historic District; George Oscar Thompson House, Tazewell County; Village View, Emporia; Hermitage, Accomack County; and Westover, Northampton County.
All properties enrolled in the register are in turn nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, maintained by the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
