Direct Dialing
Starting November 21, Centel Customers in the Front Royal and Washington exchanges will find it as simple to dial international > calls as it is to place long distance calls to points within the United States.
Previously, operator assistance was required to dial most international calls. Now, customers can dial direct to cities in 74 countries throughout the world, and save money since operator assistance is not required.
Here’s how it works: All countries and cities where direct dialing is available have been assigned code numbers, and an international access code of “011" has been designated. .Callers simply fill in the blanks of this formula:
Dial Oil - Country Code - City Code - Local Number.
Brochures listing codes for many of the countries and cities in the program are being mailed in December to Centel customers whose exchanges are served by Bell System long distance switching centers equipped for the service. The brochures also include information on rates and a time chart. Direct dialing is also available for customers placing international calls that are person-to-person, collect, credit card and charged to a third number. Higher rates for operator assistance apply, however.
