Protection from fire in the home starts with basic preventive measures such as the repair of faulty heating ^plants and- chimneys and defective wiring, and avoidance of careless smoking habits. Persons using wood burning heaters and appliances should regularly check their chimneys and vents for creosote build-up. Depending on the wood, a dangerous build-up can occur within 30 days. Dr. Einarson says these heating methods can be satisfactory and safe if used with caution and according to manufacturers’ directions. If there are questions, the individual should contact his local fire department. ^ Finally Dr. Einarson reminds, “Don’t try to stay warm in a car with the windows and vents closed and the motor running. Many people are unintentionally overcome by carbon monoxide by doing this.” Even in the most severe cold weather fresh air must be allowed into the car.
