State Studied
As Dump Site
Virginia is one of 23 states being studied in search of a site for an underground dump for highly radioactive wastes, according to the federal Energy Department. Sixteen states in the East and Great Lakes regions, including Virginia, were chosen because a consultant’s study said they offered the most promising granite formations.
An Energy Department spokesman said the states will have a year to review the study’s findings and comment before the Department signs cooperative agreements with them to collect more data, according to a report in the October publication put out by Virginia’s Council on the Environment.
