There are some pros and cons to be considered in whether or not to plow the home vegetable garden in the fall.
“Fall plowing offers the advantage of allowing earlier spring planting, but limits the amount of cover crop that can be grown,” said Diane Relf, Virginia Tech Extension specialist in home horticulture.
Heavy soils benefit from fall plowing by exposure to freezing and thawing, she continued. Fill also is a good time to plow in large applications of organic matter which will decompose by spring.
Fall plowing is not recommended for hillside or steep plots, she cautioned. Serious erosion can occur where unplanted soils are left exposed to the elements of rain and wind.
