Chessie
Spotted
Chessie, Virginia’s elusive sea monster, was sighted by fishing parties on four boats off Smith Point in the Chesapeake Bay on September 28, 1980, shortly after noon.
According to the October issue of the Virginia Council on the Environment’s Digest of Environmental News witnesses reported that the serpent-like creature’s head appeared to weigh about 50 pounds and it had a tail as large as a human thigh. Its head and back was spiked, witnesses said, and it rolled over to look at the boat captain before diving under water.
In early September, two Maryland residents reported seeing a similar creature near Stevensville, Md., in Eastern Bay. There have been stories, however, of people seeing Chessie and not wanting to report it, according to the Digest.
