Superintendent William Bloomer unveiled his proposed $2,245,792 school budget for 1981-82 to the Rappahannock school board at Tuesday’s special budget session.
The budget presents a 21 per cent increase in total school funds over the $1,856,302 expected to be spent in the current year.
On the other side of the ledger, the proposed budget will require an additional $284,002 in county funds over the $925,896 appropriated by the Rappahannock supervisors this year, a hike of 30.7 per cent.
At the same time, federal funds to support the budget are expected to jump by 20.2 per cent while the state's share lags far behind with only an 11 per cent climb.
“The state very piously says it's going to hold down programs and with the mandates from Richmond, their share goes up 11 per cent and ours goes up 30 per cent!” complained Newbill Miller. "It’s so hypocritical to put a ban on spending at the state level and then slough programs off on localities that they have to fund.”
The line item by line item review that Bloomer conducted for the school board until past 11 p.m. shows a
91.6%
