They weren’t invested in productive enterprises. They were spent as received for whatever the government needed money for. The Social Security Trust Fund is an accounting device and the government was never eager to thank the American workers for the excess taxes they were paying. I cite this as one example of how workers and the aged aren’t the cause of our problems. The sectors of the society responsible for our ills are, for example, the following: Advertising, the automobilehighway complex, the military-industrial complex, monopolistic and multinational corporations, real estate speculators, dishonest and cowardly public office holders, unwise bankers, rich tax dodgers and the medical professions. The power of these groups determines how issues are framed for public discussion and how they are addressed by public bodies. It is these groups whom President Reagan, his policies and friends represent and who will try to keep attention from themselves and instead focused on the less well organized sections of society mentioned above. To misplace the sources of our problems is understandable behavior. but it is irresponsible and poor public policy, as events will increasingly demonstrate.
