Wood pointed out that many county residents don’t know how to contact their local fire department or rescue squad. He said that recently while writing out a check as a donation, he realized he didn’t have the Sperryville fire department’s number and was unable to find it in the telephone directory.
Sheriff Buntin replied that in some directories, the number is listed under Mrs. Ethel Clater’s name and she calls Cecil Baldwin who sets off the siren. Sperryville’s fire department and rescue squads are the only emergency services dispatched by telephone. Amissville, Castleton, Washington and Flint Hill are dispatched by the Culpeper Sheriffs Department and Chester Gap by the Warren County Sheriffs Department.
“There should be a central number that goes to the county dispatcher,” said supervisor Hubert Gilkey.
Luke agreed that would be the “ideal situation.” He added that with the request from Culpeper Fire Departments to discountinue dispatch service for Rappahannock’s sheriff’s department, he will appeal to the state compensation board to fund salaries for staff to operate the county’s own service, estimated at S42.700 for one part-time and four full-time positions. “But I don't think we’ll get approval for five or even two new personnel," he said.
