Rappahannock’s population has jumped by almost 16 per cent in the past ten years, according to the preliminary report released this week on the 1980 census of population and housing. According to the census, the county’s population has climbed from 5,199 in 1970 to 6,028 in 1980, an increase of 829 or 15.9 per cent. Jackson and Piedmont show the biggest population increase among the county s five districts in the last decade, 34 per cent and 33 per cent respectively. The count in Jackson District went from 1,043 to 1,403 and in Piedmont from 840 to 1,121 in 1980.
Over the past ten years, Hampton District dropped seven per cent in population from 1,231 in 1970 to 1,157 in 1980. At the same time, the town of Washington grew by 27 per cent from 189 to 240.
Wakefield District’s population grew by only two per cent in the last decade, from 1,177 to 1,211.
Stonewall-Hawthrone District was not in existence in 1970. Its 1980 population.
