Track coaches Ann Spieker and Bill Child were all smiles 1st Wednesday despite Rappahannock's loss to Stonewall Jackson in the season opener at Mount Jackson.
"We have a real competitive group.” Spieker said of both the b'oys and girls track contingents. "Twentythree of our kids met the individual performance goals set by the coaches."
Noting that Stonewall Jackson may be the toughest competition in this year's Skyline District. Spiker praised the above-expectation performances turned in by the Panthers, even though the girls lost. 77-36. and the boys were defeated, 94-41.
Stars of the meet for the Lady Panthers were runners in the 880 yard relay, Kathryn Davis, Cristol Porter. Raynetta Gheen and Kim Williams, who took first place in 1:54.7, finishing in the rain 50 yards ahead of Stonewall. The “fast four" easily won the 440 relay as well with a time of 54.1 seconds.
In the 100 yard dash, the Stonewall runner’s time of 12.3 seconds was just a fraction of a second better than Gheen's second place time of 12.4 seconds.
Kim Williams was second in the hurdles with a 16.2 second finish, slightly off the first place time of 15.9 seconds.
Porter crossed the line for first place in the 220 yard run in 27.9 seconds and took first in the high jump with a leap of 4'10".
Other tracksters placing for Rappahannock included: —Porter. 2nd in the lone jump with 6’3”, followed by Davis in 3rd with 15’2”, —Mary Jordan, 3rd in shot put with a throw of 30'5‘/2",
