would like to see a real center for the arts in Rappahannock. It’s time has come!” announced Waldron O’Connor, one of many speakers at last Monday’s meeting to “brainstorm” some type of center for the county.
The 40-some people in the audience agreed that it's time for something but just what and just where was a center of disagreement.
Alternatives on “what” included an arts center which would focus on drama, cinema and choral presentations; an arts center which would include those three elements plus dance presentations, rental space for visual artists to create, train, display and sell their work, space for dance classes and rehearsals, garden club shows, hunt dances and church dinners; a community center with room for everything mentioned previously plus senior citizen activities and Sursum Corda School and Day Care.
The “where” focused on two aspects: either buying the old theater on Gay Street and remodeling it into a small arts center with rental offices or renting the old Washington school which belongs to William Carrigan and renovating the huge building into an arts and community center.
