No Control On Dogs
Also under consideration at Monday’s hearing was an ordinance barring dogs from running loose off their owner’s property when not under the owner’s control. Keim asked if passage of this law would enable the supervisors to control running deer with dogs.
“It’s a matter of definition...When is a dog under your control and when is it not under your control?” Cross replied. He described the proposed law as a dog control ordinance rather than a hunting regulation and maintained that the supervisors do not have authority to control running deer with dogs, only dogs running at large.
Cross noted that it is currently illegal to hunt deer with dogs west of the Blue Ridge. The Game Commission is now considering moving the line east of the Blue Ridge along Route 29, he reported. If that is done, it will become illegal to hunt deer with dogs in parts of Culpeper and Madison Counties and in all of Rappahannock, Cross said.
Alson Atkins of Sperryville told the supervisors that he had caught a man hunting on his place, carrying a loaded gun, but when stopped, the intruder maintained he wasn’t hunting. “If I took him to court, who would win?” he asked.
