If the fish show signs of distress, broadcast 50-100 lbs. of superphosphate per surface acre. It stimulates the microscopic plants to give off more oxygen.
Muddy water is also quite common in ponds, especially in heavily farmed areas. This largely because of runoff from cultivated crop fields. Also when a pond is newly built, very small soil particles will remain suspended in the water. The amount may vary with the type of soils. You can help clear up this kind of muddiness by broadcasting 50 lbs. of superphosphate and 100 lbs. of cottonseed meal per surface acre. Double this amount if the pond is extra muddy. It is best to do this in the spring or fall because of the possibility of lowering the oxygen deficiency during the hot summer.
Gypsum also clears muddy water. Use 12 lbs. per 1,000 cubic feet of water 500 lbs. - ac. ft. It is not harmful to fish or livestock and does not add to fertility in the pond water. Ponds usually clear up in a week or two after treatment.
