Most ponds in this area are considered as warm water ponds and will not sustain trout in a productive stage. They usually must be stocked with other favorable fish combinations such as largemouth bass and bluegill. Catfish is not a bad choice either. If water temperature is either too warm or too cold for the desired fish, there would be little or no growth. Many times this leads to fishkill.
Some of the most common problems confronting pond owners are algae growth, fish-kill, muddy water, lack of water and overstocking.
Algae (pond scum) in ponds is by far the most common problem of them all. Algae generally occurs when the sources of water are from springs, runoff from pastures or areas- where organic materials are high. As with algae, most weeds require sunlight to grow. Therefore, in the case of clear spring water, the likelihood of algae is good. As a rule of thumb, by lowering a light colored object 18" into the water, you can help determine whether or not you may have algae growth or need fertilizer in the pond. If the object is visible at this depth, you should consider a mineral fertilizer such as 8-8-2 or 1616-4 (a ratio of 4:4:2). Exact amounts vary with the season, but for the starters it is suggested 100 lbs. or 40 lbs. respectively in the spring per surface acre three - six times at about ten day intervals. Retest after each application.
