In a second letter read by Fontaine, former superintendent William Bloomer described Wingfield as fair, firm, friendly and honest, a man well respected by students and faculty alike and an administrator who ran the high school in accordance with school board regulations.

A petition signed by 15 elementary school teachers and submitted by Robin Dexter expressed concern over the manner in which Wingfield received notice that he wouldn’t be rehired. Ongoing feedback in the evaluation process and response by the individual under evaluation is essential, the petition signers maintained, noting that Wingfield had received no prior communication from the superintendent expressing dissatisfaction with the principal's performance.

A second petition from 15 elementary teachers, all members of the Rappahannock County Education Association, echoed the same sentiments. The signers maintained teachers and administrators should be given a fair, continual evaluation and a voice in the evaluation process. Wingfield’s leadership, they said, has “fostered academic improvement" at the high school. “A fair appraisal is the very least such a person deserves,” the signers stated.

Marie Davis presented a third petition in favor of Wingfield’s reappointment signed by approximately 200 parents, most of them residents of the Washington, Woodville and Boston areas.

All but a few of the hundreds of hands in the library went up when Robert Fox asked for a showing from those in favor of Wingfield’s continuing at his post.
