To the editor:
I read in your paper that one of the Supervisors accused me of "blackmail” when he heard I would not renew the lease for the school board office in my building, unless certain conditions were met.
Webster’s New Word Dictionary defines “blackmail" as...“payment extorted to prevent disclosure of information that could bring disgrace.” Since everyone who read your paper the week before was already aware that the Superintendent had not recommended the renewal of Mr. Wingfield’s contract as principal, it wouldn't be worthwhile for me to threaten to disclose that “disgraceful information.” I merely stated, clearly and openly, conditions under which I would consider renewing the lease.
I wonder if Mr. Estabrook showed as little courtesy to Mr. Wingfield as he has to me. Not once has he come to me with any requests, complaints or suggestions with regard to the school board office, though I visited him shortly after he arrived and offered whatever help I could to make conditions more bearable. His remark at that time was “everything is fine, just fine." Then I read in your paper - just the next day - that he had complained at the board meeting of totally inadequate space, crowded conditions, no privacy, etc. A later edition of your paper informed us all that the school board and superintendent positively wanted to leave the “vermin and varmint ridden fire trap." 1 read in still another edition of your paper that, according to Estabrook, the lease agreement between the School Board and the Olde Hotel Apts, was on a 30-day basis.
