Community College’s race the only other running event he enters. The first year Matthew competed, he ran in the 18 and under category, placing fourth. Since the debut of the Fodderstack, however, aditional categories have been added to keep the competition even and for the past two years, Matthew has won the 12 and under division.
He plans on running track and cross country when he reaches high school. ‘‘Running—and especially running in the Fodderstack—is fantastic. 1 don’t care if 1 win. It’s just real fun.”
Emily Vawter exercises daily all year but steps up her regime to include running about a month or two before the Fodderstack. A transplanted Alexandrian who moved to the county in 1976 when she and her husband retired, she’s raced in the Fodderstack in 1979 and ’80, winning her division both years.
She limits her training to just what is required to complete the distance, starting at a mile or two and working her way up to where she runs the actual course the week before the race. “I hope to be running six miles by early in the week of the race,” she said.
Mrs. Vawter discounts worry that the effort might be too strenuous for a woman her age. “It’s good exercise," she maintained.
