Bottley also noted that the wiring in the residence side of the building needs to be checked. “It appears to be quite old." In addition, the structural soundness of that side of the building should be evaluated. “It’s hard to say from just walking through if there’s anything that presents a substantial concern," he added.
State Funds?
Amendments to the Virginia Code which take effect July 1 provide that certain funds will be made available for jail renovation. The total amount for which a locality may become eligible is not to exceed $100,000 or half the cost of the project, according to Bottley. But while Code revisions may provide for this additional source of revenue, no funds for jail renovations were included in the two-year state budget just passed by the General Assembly, Bottley noted.
Chances for Rappahannock securing money for jail renovations through that source don't look good, added the Department of Correction’s official. “This is an emergency situation and efforts will be made to try to assist Rappahannock but there are no guarantees."
As an alternative to renovating the lock-up or building a new facility, Bottley suggested that the county supervisors may want to authorize an additional deputy and vehicle for transporting prisoners to Shenandoah County, the closest jail with empty beds. Located in Woodstock approximately 50 miles away, that jail had eight empty beds as of last week, Bottley said. Overcrowding is a major problem in jails throughout
