With the birth of Josephine, another helper was recruited, and there was no question but that she would also accompany Jon on his research missions. “She was extraordinarily good,” Hazel said. “She spent up to 12 hours a day in a Landrover as a baby, just watching and waiting.”
Instead of blocks and rattles, Josephine had lions, tigers, zebras and elephants to look at. As a child, she once climbed up some rocks to come face-to-face with a lioness. “Well, she went one way and the lion went the other," Jon said.
Man vs. Lion
According to Rood, this is normal behavior for lions, who have learned to avoid men despite the superior size, strength and speed of the big cats. “Africans consider it a matter of pride not to run away from a lion,” he said. “Normally, the lion will be the first to run.”
Pride or not. Rood has had occasion to run away from a lioness. “An exception is a lioness with her cubs,” he said.
Rood came across a mother with her cubs when he was watching a mongoose family. This lion did charge and chased Rood to his vehicle. Rood won the race, but just barely, and the experience taught him to stay close to shelter while in the field.
There are other situations where lions are a threat to man. They will roam African villages, steering clear of the huts but carrying off a man who has fallen drunk in the street. “Sometimes a pride of lions will kill a helpless man
