When it came time to pick a home base in the States instead of just visiting around during the off season for wildlife research, the Roods chose Rappahannock. “We looked in a radius around the Conservation Center that would make it possible to commute,” Hazel said. “There was just no question—we wanted to live here.”
Last Thursday, the Roods shared some of their unusual experiences with their new Rappahannock neighbors at a well-attended film and talk presentation at the Rappahannock County Library. After seeing the wild beauty of the high Tanzanian plains, it’s easy to understand why the Roods keep going back.

“It's too bad we couldn’t have met like some friends of ours in Africa,” Hazel said. “He was riding on a tiger when his future wife saw him for the first time.”
