We need, however, to learn to work together,” he maintained, criticizing the timing of Estabrook’s recommendation when Wingfield's daughter has just one more year before graduating from the high school.
Irving Kenyon also supoorted the principal. “Someone or something has been holding that high school together for all these years. I doubt if it’s the spaciousness, the science labs without water, the home ec room or the business section with its up-to-date equipment. I doubt if it’s the high salaries paid to teachers or the living conditions in Rappahannock County...where you have to drive 20 to 30 minutes to a drug store. Some person or some thing has been holding the high school together under conditions that are not ideal. 1 suggest that person might be Mr. Wingfield.”
High school teacher Denise Nelson told the board she was “speaking to Mr. Wingfield’s effectiveness, not his personality but his integrity... He strives for higher educational quality in the high school.”
“There’s no one here who isn’t for quality education,” maintained Aileen Johnson. “I think we have quality education. We may not have quantity education but you can’t blame Mr. Wingfield for that.” She added that she had a son who attended the high school “If he didn’t get it, it wasn't the teacher’s fault. It was his fault. I's up to the student, to the person, to get it.” The fact that RCHS doesn’t have the problems found in other high schools "is due to Mr. Wingfield and his relationship with the students,” Johnson concluded.
