Rappahannock's first special grand jury will be empaneled Thursday morning, November 18, to investigate last week's shooting death of Ranee Spellman.
Spellman, manager of Points of View Farm on Route 729 near Ben Venue, was reportedly widening a right-of-way through the property of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Kidwell when he was felled by a shotgun blast to the chest. Sheriff W. A. Buntin, Deputy John Henry Woodard and State Trooper R. A. Baines arrived at the scene just minutes after the shooting took place to find the 36-year-old farm manager dead on his bulldozer.
No charges have been placed relating to Spellman's death, which occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9. Commonwealth’s attorney Douglas Baumgardner, who asked the circuit court for the special grand jury, has announced that he will make no further comment on the case until the grand jury’s investigation is completed and its report filed with the court.
