The deer season opened with a bang on Monday but judging by the animals turned in at checking stations around the county, it promises to be less than a record year for local hunters.
‘‘Rappahannock didn’t have anywhere near as many deer checked on opening day as in years past," said County game warden Jim Bankston. “The economy has had an impact on hunting pressures. People are working if they have work instead of taking opening day off to hunt.” He predicted, however, that hunting pressures and the deer harvest will both pick up this weekend.
Blue Ridge Guns in Amissville reported 65 bucks checked on Monday with an additional 20 in by late Tuesday afternoon. So far, the lead in the big buck contest sponsored by the gun shop goes to 15-year-old Greg Meredith of Woodville. The young man bagged a 172 pound, nine pointer, the first deer he’s ever killed, according to Robert Bowers, Blue Ridge proprietor. Bowers noted that entries in the contest are judged solely by weight.
