throw up, I went instead to the jail in Leesburg (Loudoun County), and sat outside and blew the horn until someone came out. 1 couldn’t get out of the car. I didn’t have any clothes left. The men who came out represented the Virginia State Police, the Sheriff of Loudoun and one Town Policeman and the Jailor (Who went back in and got me a pair of jail pants and a jail blanket). Jurisdiction was determined and both a State Trooper and a Deputy escorted me to the hospital.
Within minutes of my arrival there, the investigator from the Sheriffs Department and Irene Wodell appeared, she with a housecoat for me to cover my nakedness. Even in shocktrauma. these people all are most helpful and come through under the worst possible circumstances to support the victim.
You might call Irene Wodell a ‘‘Bleeding Heart.” If so, we need many more like her. I couldn’t have lived through this without her heljJ.’ Sht'tfof only was at the hospital from the beginning (after having worked 12 hours in the office, she had to get up out of bed and drive 15 miles in the middle of the night to get to ME...but now I know this is a common occurance with her) but she also saw me through the awful preliminary hearing and the worse trial months later, and in between she kept in frequent touch with me to keep my ‘spirits’ up or just to be supportive.
This thing was not the sort of experience one gets over and forgets it ever happened. Once a VICTIM, one’s life is completely changed. I had to give up and retire from my government job five or ten years before I planned to.
My whole life changed. My income from retirement and everything else is about 20 percent of what it used to be. and I am struggling for existance financially. However, for two years now I have been one of Irene Wodell’s volunteers. She has NO paid assistants. Our whole Program operates with volunteers, many of whom, like myself are also victims. I have to drive 40 miles to and from this volunteer job. I get no pay. I love the work.
