Trible-watchers in the state believe the new senator will move with considerable haste and characteristic energy to occupy a major part of the senatorial center stage. Thus Sen. Warner may find himself with a new and vastly different kind of problem on his hands.
Unlike Sen. Byrd, who never considered seeking higher office, the fires of political ambition burn so intensely in Mr. Trible’s belly they can probably be seen glowing through his overcoat on a dark night. Not only is Mr. Trible ambitious, he is capable of pursuing his goals with computer like efficiency.
He is very much a product of the consultant and mass marketing age of politics. Since he is, it is very difficult to determine where his basic convictions lie. If Sen. Byrd’s conservatism is deep-grained. Mr. Trible’s is more pragmatic, and more likely to be shaped by his consultant’s polling results to conform to the demands of the electorate at hand.
That electorate, at least for the moment, is Virginia. Also, at least for the moment, it is Byrdconservative which is to say it is slightly to the right of being Warner-conservative. And Mr. Trible. being pragmatic..might well move to occupy that vacated Byrd turf on Sen. Warner’s right.
If the newcomer should establish a foothold there. Sen. Warner might find himself in the well-nigh unthinkable position of having his record checked to see if he is cancelling Mr. Trible’s votes.
