terjected. “Who cares if you can heat it with a match if you’re not happy living there.” According to Ritvo, the two are particularly interested in exploring the concept of incorporating indoor greenhouses as port of a passive solar system. “We’re trying to get away from the idea that there’s ONE way to build a solar house. We believe that design can be evolved to the way people want to live."

“And we’ve already proved that you can build a solar house on a north-facing slope,” Clifton added.

They see no limit to the uses for the computer and the system they’ve built around it. “We can do any type of product—graphic and architectural. You go through the same steps to get to the finished product, whether it’s furniture, a brochure or a house," Ritvo maintained. “Most people look at how things are different. We look at how they are the same. We find the commonality, the elements that are similar to all kinds of design problems. It allows us to streamline the entire process.” They hope to be able to offer contractors an operating package in the near future. "We don’t really want to be builders. Our main aim is to design a building system to maximize the efficiency of any project, no matter how big or small. Energy efficiency doesn’t just apply to solar houses,” Ritvo said. “The key word is integration. We’re trying to package a package for builders, to put together a whole design approach that we can market in a kit.” Ritvo and Clifton traveled different paths to Rappahannock County and the office they share in Washington’s Clopton House and spent five years in developing their business
