What’s In

A Barrel?

Sunday morning, when it was just about light enough to find the telephone, one of my favorite farmers, Dabney “Chink" Eastham. called and started asking questions about corn measurement - number of bushels in a barrel, cubic feet, that sort of thing.

This reminded me of last winter when I was having lunch with a group of mostly older beef cattle farmers at an area meeting. I brought up the question of how many bushels of ear corn were in a barrel. Here is the response: Frederick and Madison Counties - 7 bushels, Augusta County (in the Mennonite farming area) - 10 bushels, Rappahannock County - 9 bushels; a Rappahannock barrel weighs 370 pounds before Christmas and 350 pounds after Christmas. Another farmer wasn't sure how many bushels were in a barrel, but he knew his Chevy Luv pickup truck with a 6 ft. bed heaped full held three barrels.
