I he public may never know the whole story behind the shooting that left Ranee Spellman dead.
But one thing we do know — there were at least two people with loaded weapons, on that Ben Venue hillside last Tuesday, apparently ready to settle a right-of-way dispute with guns.
This is not the Wild West of yesteryear. This is Rappahannock County in 1982. We have laws. We have law enforcement officers. We have courts of law.
The act of arming one’s self with a loaded gun and then entering a situation where confortation is likely implies a willingness to use that weapon. This may have been an appropriate response in frontier days. It is not an appropriate response today.
