on a program with Washington, D.C. meteorologist Bob Ryan when his two finest specimens of wooly worms, captured by Hershey and confined in paper cups, escaped to be lost forever somewhere on Hershey’s porch.
To replace the wandering wooly worms, Hershey is offering a prize - two prizes, in fact. In a letter to the Rappahannock News Hershey mentioned a $25.00 cash award for the person bringing in the blackest wooly bear: and $25.00 for the person finding the wooliest wooly bear. At the time of his letter, he’d received over twenty worms, all held captive at the Almanack's Hagerstown office.
Those of us lulled to complacency by this week’s mild weather may wonder at what the furry creatures revealed to Hershey. When we attempted to reach him by phone at his office, to see if his contest was still open, Hershey was gone — south for a long vacation.
