Regarding Robert W. Eastham's letter to the editor. 1 can’t decide whether Mr. Eastham can't read or doesn't understand what he reads.
The Victim Witness Program is not MY pet project. The Victim Witness Program was started many years ago to aid victims of crime and witnesses to those ' crimes.
The President of the United States has a Task Force for Victim’s of Crime and the results will be presented to the nation in December. I know the President is recommending that each jurisdiction have a program to assist victims of crime. The Heinz-Laxalt Bill. S-2420, to protect victims and witnesses of crime, recently passed the Senate. The Governor and Former Governor of Virginia are in favor of the Victim Witness Program and have committees working in Virginia to assist in starting additional programs. There are hundreds such programs all over the United States and there are many programs in the State of Virginia. Why should the victims and witnesses of Rappahannock and Fauquier County not have an advocate to assist them?
My job in Rappahannock County was to assist the commonwealth's attorney and the defense attorney in making sure witnesses were in the witness room when needed. Many witnesses came from great distances to testify. They were on call to come at a specific time, testify, and go back to their respective jobs. This saves the taxpayers many dollars and you don’t have a group of witnesses “hanging” around the courthouse all day. Some of the witnesses were on call and had to return to the Rappahannock courthouse to testify again. It was my job to be sure they were back in the witness room on time and relaxed when they took the witness stand.
