Despite almost freezing temperatures and a brisk wind, Timmy Holler of Stonewall Jackson set a new state “A” mark of 16:50.3, breaking the 16:50.6 record set last year by John Brumback, also of Stonewall.
Mathew Richardson of Buffalo Gap was second in 17:03.3, and Carl Johnson of Luray third in 17:22.9.
At Charlottesville, Rappahannock faced 23 of the top “A" schools in Virginia. Other Panther runners placing in the first 20 were Larrv Sisk (15th), Ronnie Atkins (17th) and Craig Kenyon (18th). Ricky Shaw finished 42nd, Eldwoon Dodson 57th and David Dodson 58th. Coach Ann Speiker did not have their times for the 3.1 mile course. The information is being mailed by statisticians at the state finals and is expected to arrive later this week, according to the Panther coach.
Team totals were Strasburg 48, Stonewall %, Rappahannock 97, Buffalo Gap 98, Luray 174 and Goochland 176. Strasburg, Stonewall and Rappahannock finished in' the same one-two-three order in the district finals held last month at RCHS. In the regionals the following week, Buffalo Gap edged in front of the Bull Run District powerhouses for first with Stonewall and Strasburg switching places for second and third and Rappahannock just a couple of points behind in fourth.
